Do you practice “Gratitude”?

In a previous post, I mentioned the terms Service and Gratitude and how they’d been coming up for me over and over again in the past few months. In that post, I talked about some of the new ways for me to think about service.  Now, I’d like to focus on gratitude.  It’s been said by many that practicing gratitude can lead to happiness and actually, more success.

“[I] never talk about gratitude and joy separately, for this reason. In 12 years, I’ve never interviewed a single person who would describe their lives as joyful, who would describe themselves as joyous, who was not actively practicing gratitude.”― Brené Brown

She also states that it requires more than “having” gratitude.  It requires “practicing” gratitude on a daily basis.  At times, we all get impatient with our careers no matter our successes.  Sometimes there’s a lull or we just want to reach new, higher level goals.  Sometimes, we are new to the business, and it all just seems so overwhelming.

The act of actually writing down the things we are grateful for can be an uplifting experience in itself.  It also helps us focus on the steps, no matter how small, that we are taking to achieve our dreams.  It’s easy to think “I’ll be happy when…”, but that feeling of happiness and joy, now, can help alter our mood, perception, and the ways in which we run our business and interact with others.

The repeating themes of service and gratitude that I have been encountering lately have really resonated with me.  I’m using them to deal with the big dreams and little setbacks that I embrace each day in my personal life, acting and voice over career.  The snub, negative comment, or missed opportunity still causes it’s own time of angst, but I’m working on putting those things in perspective quicker and not letting them cause undue influence on my day or my attitude.  There’s always something to learn, and I’d prefer to put my energy into bringing a new dream to light.
